The Benefits of Anodized Aluminum in Marine Environments

The Benefits of Anodized Aluminum in Marine Environments

Keeping equipment from being damaged in a marine environment is no easy task. Constant exposure to salt and water can take a toll on even the toughest materials. Fortunately, we at Secoa Metal Finishing know exactly how to protect your marine equipment from corrosion and deterioration: have it anodized.

Anodizing is an electrochemical process used to produce an anodic oxide film on an aluminum surface. The result is an extremely durable finish that’s particularly well suited for marine applications. Aluminum has a fairly high corrosion resistance to begin with, but it’s not nearly enough to fight off the effects of being regularly exposed, or even submerged, in salt water. Anodized aluminum, on the other hand, offers superior corrosion resistance that holds up even in the harshest environments.

At Secoa, we offer high quality anodizing services for all of your marine equipment. But that’s not all; we take anodizing to the next level with DiamonDyze™. DiamonDyze™ is a nanoceramic technology that can be incorporated into the anodizing process. It dramatically improves a part’s wear, corrosion, thermal, and chemical resistance—offering even more protection than standard anodizing. It is especially effective against salt-spray, and is therefore ideal for marine applications.

Secoa Metal Finishing is one of just a few licensed DiamonDyze™ applicators in the United States. So, if you want to use the best possible coating for your marine equipment, contact us today and ask about DiamonDyze™. DiamonDyze: A Breakthrough in Ceramic Anodizing

DiamonDyze is a breakthrough in advanced nano-ceramic and colored anodizing. At Secoa Technology, our staff has the licensing right to utilize this treatment. We all understand the advantages this process offers to those applications requiring anodizing. Our staff utilizes it to provide components with certain desirable characteristics.

What Are the Advantages?

When an applicator uses DiamonDyze, it provides two specific and now integrated characteristics to the substrate surface. This formulation allows our staff to:

  • Add color without the need of additional steps
  • Impart various protective qualities

This ability makes the entire process faster, easier, and more environmentally friendly. Overall, by using this process, an applicator recognizes the benefits to the customer and the metal finishing company. The process:

  • Is more environmentally-friendly because it uses less energy and fewer toxic materials
  • Results in a smoother surface with fewer pores
  • Provides good chemical resistance
  • Imbues greater corrosion resistance
  • Improves the ability to withstand wear-and-tear
  • Creates good thermal resistance
  • Offers customers the chance to select from any available standard color. This includes various shades resulting from the blending of existing colors
  • While it is possible to anodize other metals, aluminum remains the most popular metal benefitting from this process.

Aluminum Parts and DiamonDyze

For any aluminum component – including 2024 and 6061, you want to anodize, we at Secoa Technology can apply DiamonDyze to products such as:

  • Cylinder Heads
  • Cylinder Sleeves
  • Intake Manifolds
  • Pistons
  • Rocker Arms
  • Shock Absorbers
  • Turbo Intake Housings

Overall, it is popular for those in several industries including automotive, marine, and hardware. At Secoa Technology, we utilize it for both Type II and Type III anodizing.

DiamonDyze: Technologically Superior Anodizing

Research reveals the benefits of preferring a DiamonDyze treatment to conventional anodizing. This one-step dying and anodizing process produce a component that is superior in many ways. At Secoa Technology, we utilize DiamonDyze to provide high-quality results in corrosion resistance and color for Type II and Type III anodizing.

Products: Secoa Technology Now Carries DiamonDyze

Secoa Technology is excited to announce that it now offers a new hard anodize process called Diamondyze.  After 50 years in the Industrial Coating and Plating business, Secoa is convinced that this process will revolutionize the plating industry. DiamonDyze offers a broad range of major improvements in the field of hard anodizing for the end user. The DiamonDyze process imbeds ceramic particles with other proprietary nano-particles into the porosity of the aluminum oxide hard coat, providing a much harder surface that is both very dense and porous free.

Since Secoa Technology has begun to use DiamonDyze we have found countless reasons why we feel that this is a superior process to other platings.  Listed below are just a few of the improvements that have been found in so far with the DiamonDyze process and we feel that this list has barely scratched the surface with the potential of what DiamonDyze can offer.

1. DiamonDyze has proven to be harder than the best of standard hard anodize processes. In a recent simple test, an Aluminum part was plated with DiamonDyze and attached to a spinning lathe.  A standard file was then used to try and wear the plating off and after the test was completed, the result was a DiamonDyzed part with an undamaged, polished surface and a file with its teeth worn off.

2. Panels coated with Diamondyze exposed from 6,000 to 10,000 hours salt spray showed no failure.

3. One of the biggest innovations with Diamondyze is that it can be offered in many colors. Recently, Secoa Technology applied DiamonDyze with a brass impregnated color to machined aluminum parts as a replacement for costly, actual brass parts and the result was two indistinguishable parts.  As a result, our customer has given us the go ahead to DiamonDyze tens of thousands of these parts per month, providing them significant cost savings and a technically superior part.

4. Because the surfaces that are produced with DiamonDyze are very dense they are also very smooth.

5. DiamonDyze is cost competitive with standard Hard Anodizing, Vacuum Deposition, Plasma Spray and Vapor Deposition.
