What Materials Can You Powder Coat?

What Materials Can You Powder Coat?

Almost any material can be powder coated. Metal is the most commonly powder coated, due to the type of applications powder coated products are put to. Wood, glass plastic, MDF and a number of different composite materials can also be powder coated if required.

How Much Thickness Does Powder Coating Add?

The thickness of the powder coat depends on the use to which it is going to be put. For example, typically a coat of between 0.002” and 0.005” is used for protection against general wear and abrasion. A similar thickness is used for protection against UV light and the effects of weather. For non-stick and quick release applications, the layer may be thinner – down to 0.001”, or thicker, up to .005”. Some specialized industrial coatings can be as thick as 0.05” or more.

How Durable is Powder Coating?

The exact amount of time which a powder coating will last for depends on variables such as location, function and the type of material and coating utilized. Typically powder coating lasts significantly longer than paint. In most situations, powder coating will last for several decades before further work is required.

Is Powder Coating Heat Resistant?

In general, powder coating is extremely heat resistant. The exact level of tolerance is determined by factors such as the type of coating used and the frequency/duration of the temperatures it is expected to tolerate. Usually a silicon-based coating will work well in environments where the temperature is in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius (1832 Fahrenheit).

Is Powder Coating Rust Proof?

Yes, powder coating is rust proof. Resistance to corrosion from water or chemicals is one of the main advantages which powder coating brings.

What Is the Standard Thickness of Powder Coating?

There is no such thing as a “standard” thickness for powder coating. The required thickness depends on variables such as: end use; type of component; type of coating. Contact your powder coating specialist for technical specifications which relate to your specific project.
